Scientists, conservationists, and volunteers united to prevent biological extinction of marine mammals. Goal is to scientifically identify adverse factors affecting the recovery of endangered marine mammals and work to eradicate those factors. Provides research, conservation, and educational programs involving whales, dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals. Believes that aside from philosophical, ethical, and emotional issues, whales, dolphins, and porpoises are biologically essential to the earth's ecosystem. Establishes primary and long-term contact with marine mammals in their natural environment allowing scientists to observe and analyze animal behavior and thus create and modify conservation programs to meet their needs. Conducts research programs throughout the Pacific, with recent whale studies in Hawaii, American and Western Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Australia, and Alaska. Sponsors lectures for schools, community groups, and universities. Solicits funds through the Adopt-A-Whale Program, merchandise sales, whalewatching cruises, expeditions, and internships. Maintains speakers' bureau, and library of books and other publications on marine mammals and their habitat. Is currently studying the effects of increased human activity in the humpback whale's Hawaiian breeding grounds as a possible contributor to the whale's reduced biological fitness.
