Participants are upper-level undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, or recent graduates seeking professional experience relevant to careers in environmental fields. Purpose is to foster professional development and the resolution of priority environmental issues in the public and private sectors. Offers paid, full-time assignments with private industry, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations requesting assistance for terms ranging from 12 to 52 weeks. Participants are employed by CEIP as research or field associates but are considered actual staff members of the sponsoring organization. Projects are in one of three divisions: Conservation Services; Public Policy and Community Development; Technical Services. Individual subject areas include administrative/legal assistance, communications, community development, education, energy, environmental assessments, hazardous substances, historic preservation, land use, natural resource management, pollution control, public/occupational health, recreation, transportation, and wildlife. Organizes regional activities designed to complement associates' work experience; facilitates exchange of information on environmental issues. Maintains Environmental Grant Program to subsidize quality projects offered by organizations with insufficient funds to support associates. Provides career counseling.
