Seeks to further sound conservation practices, and to protect birds and other wildlife and the environment on which they depend. Conducts a special program of natural history field studies jointly with the graduate school of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an ecology program for inner-city schools in Washington, DC, and environmental education programs for children and adults. Operates Woodend, a 40-acre urban environmental education center in Chevy Chase, MD. Sponsors series of illustrated lectures and field trips to varied habitats in the mid-Atlantic states; compiles statistics on local natural history; maintains museum. Operates speakers' bureau and library of 4000 volumes; bestows Paul Bartsch Award for distinguished contribution to natural history. Maintains Voice of Naturalist, a weekly recording of bird sightings.
